HEIF (HEIC)

The High Efficiency File Format (HEIF) is described in ISO/IEC 23008-12. This format is common on the latest iPhone and iPad devices using iOS 11 or later. Some digital cameras (eg: Canon) support this format as well.

Compression

The HEIF file format standard specifies that the images can be compressed using HEVC (H265), AVC (H264) or JPEG compression. But in reality, nobody really uses H264 or JPEG compression with this file format. Everybody uses HEVC (H265) compression.

The HEIF files with HEVC (H265) compression use the extension ".heic". Also, by convention, HEIF files with HEVC compression are called HEIC files.

Curretly, LEADTOOLS supports only the HEVC compression.

Features

Some places refer to this file format as HEIF, while others as HEIC. Since they represent almost the same thing, for the remainder of this topic, we will refer to everything as HEIC.
