As a part of the recent Version 19 updates, we added a new virtual document feature to the Document Viewer. The LEADTOOLS Document Composer interface makes it easy to compose a virtual document on the fly from any number of pages in any order and from multiple source documents. The document can be manipulated while being viewed and pages can be added or removed with code or interactively using drag and drop. Virtual documents created by the Document Composer can be saved on the server, shared with multiple users, and exported to any format.

After more than 20 years of working for a company that produces the leading document imaging SDK and a card carrying member of AIIM, I finally decided that it was time to personally go paperless. There are many motivations behind this decision, including reducing clutter, better protection for my data, and better access to information when and where I need it.

One of the things that was holding me back in the past was finding a system that I trusted to store my data. My definition of a trusted system is a system where I know my data is secure, safe, and available. Additionally, I need to be able capture data from anywhere, including Internet, e-mail, snail mail, and out in the real world. I was trying a combination of OneNote and OneDrive, but I was not completely happy with it and never totally dove in. Then, I discovered Evernote. I had heard about Evernote in the past, but thought of it as just a non-Microsoft replacement of OneNote. However, once I did begin considering it, I found that there are specific features in Evernote that I have not been able to find or use as easily in OneNote that can make it my trusted system.

Everybody has a smartphone in their pocket. With today's technology there is no reason to carry around a smartphone, business card scanner and a receipt scanner; just use the camera on your phone!

Scan Anything, Anywhere, Any Time
Scan anything, anywhere, any time. That is the dream for many people, and today's technology is making that a reality. Using a camera such as those on smartphones to capture information provides flexibility and can do things that a traditional scanner cannot. With the right image processing tools, a camera can capture receipts, documents, business cards, whiteboards, large format drawings, periodical pages and of course snapshots of business associates and friends with extremely high quality.

Last month we published a white paper on eDiscovery, which gave a brief overview on the Electronic Discovery Reference Model (EDRM). Today, we want to dive into more details about the EDRM and how it pertains to imaging and LEADTOOLS in particular.

Blank page detection is an important step in most document imaging workflows. For example, it can be used to help end-users make sure they have their paper facing the correct way and inform them when they've done something wrong. For a more automated solution, blank pages can be removed to save on disk space and bandwidth.

However, the difficulty with blank page detection is that it can be a bit subjective. Humans can quickly perceive a blank page because we see that the page doesn't have any text on it. But what does a computer do with a text-less page with lines, noise, borders and the like?
