Re: task printer file name length limit

It seems that the task printer has a 64 character file name length limit.

I have set up a task printer to create pdf files and to use the filename. The printer converts special characters in the file path (/  :  .  )  to '_' underscore to create a file name,  then saves the file in the specified save directory.  The file name (excluding extension) is truncated at 63 characters.

But this is inconvenient because I want to recover the original name and directory from the file and it has been truncated. 64 chars seems unreasonably short.

Is there a way to extend this limit to 256 chars?

Windows limits the file name to 255 characters only. The file name includes the full path of the file.

As I mentioned,  I am finding a limit of 64 characters for the filename including the path, which is less than the 255 limit of windows. The filename itself is relatively short, approx 16 characters.

I have tried this on my computer:

1. I created a task printer
that saves files as TIF in "D:\" using the option to "Save using the document name".

2. I created a file titled "1234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890.txt"
in "C:\". This file name is exactly 103 characters long (path + file name).

3. I printed this file with
the task printer, and the task printer created a TIF file in "D:\" titled
"1234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890 - Notepad.txt". The file created was 113 characters long.

My operating system is
Windows XP SP2, and I created the Task printer with ePrint 5 (build 5.0.1.117 – 14.5.0.050).

I am converting xml to pdf, not txt to tif as in your test.

When I create an xml file with the same name as yours: "1234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890.xml" in c:\, then view the xml file with Internet Explorer 6, and print to pdf the file name is truncated to 64 chars, with name:

"file____C__12345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123.pdf"

My operating system is Windows XP SP2, and eprint ver is 5.0.1.117 – 14.5.0.015

The limitation you are getting is from IE6 and not from ePrint.

You can check this out by doing the following:

1. Open the Windows Printers folder, and open the ePrint printer that you'll be using.

2. Open the XML file in IE6, then print it to that ePrint printer. Don't save yet.

3. Go back to ePrint Printer's
window, you can see that the name of the document is sent to the printer as 63 characters long only.

This is why you are getting that limitation when printing using IE6.
