Hybrid License Frequently Asked Questions

Q. If my application is deployed on computers that are owned by my company and are only used by employees, am I required to account for the number of users?

A. No, the hybrid license allows you to deploy an unlimited number of copies of the application software provided the copies are installed on your company’s computers and are only used by your company’s employees and contractors.

Q. My application is only installed internally but is on our servers.  Is there a limitation on the number of servers that are deployed?

A. It depends.  If the application software is on servers that are servicing your company’s employees only, there is no limitation.  If you are hosting software on your servers that is servicing the general public or commercial customers, then the hybrid license may only be used on 5 servers.  If you need to deploy the application on more than 5 servers, a distribution license is required.

Q. When do I need to account for the number of users or servers?

A. If you are commercially distributing software to customers you are licensed to deploy up to 1000 desk top/single user licenses.  If you are hosting software that is used for commercial purposes (e. g. SaaS) you are limited to using the software on up to 5 servers. LEAD will occasionally request a deployment status report from customers who own hybrid license products.

Q. How does LEAD keep track of the number of licenses I have deployed?

A. LEAD does not keep track of this.  It is your responsibility to keep track of the number of deployments if you are commercially deploying application software. The license agreement requires that you keep track of this information and that you will respond to LEAD if it requests a license compliance report.

Q. My application is freeware.  It is not commercial in that I do not charge for it.  Do I need a commercial distribution license?

A. If your application is available to anyone other than employees, you may only deploy up to 1000 copies.  If you are distributing freeware to more than 1000 users, a distribution license will be required.

Q. How do I obtain a commercial distribution license so I am not required to report the number of user licenses or sever licenses deployed?

A. Contact your LEAD sales representative and they will provide you a quotation for a commercial distribution license.  Annual and multi-year licenses are available.

Q. How is the year calculated in terms of the 1000 copy limitation?

A. The year begins when you purchase the toolkit.  At the end of the year, it automatically renews and you have the right to distribute an additional 1000 copies.

Q. Do unused licenses carryover into the next year?

A. No, each year includes a limitation of 1000 users.  There is no carryover of undeployed licenses for the ensuing year.

Q. I deploy site licenses to my customers and do not require the customers to account for the number of installations.  How are these types of licenses counted?

A. You may not grant site or enterprise licenses unless you obtain a commercial distribution license.

Q. I deploy concurrent licenses to my customers. How are these types of licenses counted?

A. We count 2 licenses or each concurrent license deployed. Therefore, if you only deploy concurrent licenses, you may deploy up to 500 concurrent licenses per year.

Q. I license your Imaging Pro product but also license the Raster PDF Plug In which requires deployment licenses.  How does the hybrid license work if I am paying deployment licenses in connection with an add on that requires deployment licenses?

A. If you are paying deployment licenses for the add on, and your application always contains the functionality contained in the add on, the deployment license fee also covers the commercial distribution license requirement for the hybrid product.  For example, your application uses Imaging Pro and Raster PDF Read Plug In and you purchased 2500 desk top licenses for Raster PDF Read Plug In.  You are licensed to deploy 2500 copies of the application and are not required to obtain an additional commercial distribution license for the number of deployments of Imaging Pro over 1000 copies per year.  The deployment license fee for the add on includes a commercial distribution license for the underlying Hybrid License toolkit (Imaging Pro).
