Internet Explorer 8 crashes on Windows XP SP3 when it runs on the welcome page

It has been noticed that Internet Explorer 8 on some Windows XP machines with SP3 crashes when installing Add-ons such as ActiveX controls or CAB installer files. This happens for no clear reason.

If this affected your browser when running the welcome page which contains the permission CAB file, you can try the following workaround:

  1. From the Internet Options dialog, advanced tab, browse to the Security node in the settings list and uncheck the "Enable memory protection to help mitigate online attacks" then click OK to close the dialog.
  2. Run the welcome page and when requested to install the CAB file click the install button and follow the instructions.
  3. Once installed you should undo the operation in step 1 by re-checking the "Enable memory protection to help mitigate online attacks"
  4. The site should run without problems after that.

Also, as a recommended solution, you can try uninstalling Microsoft Java Virtual Machine (MSJVM). This is not a guaranteed solution but is known to fix this problem in most known scenarios. For more information about Microsoft Java Virtual Machine, please check Microsoft support: http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/default.aspx
