Displaying multi-page documents in a zero-footprint web application can be a challenge because of the limitations associated with the <img> tag, which can only display a single image. A common solution is to implement a separate thumbnail viewer and attach JavaScript listener events to change the displayed image in your main "viewer." A more advanced solution may involve detecting the scroll position and modifying the DOM to create a continuously scrolling viewer. Those are both great for any file with multiple pages, but what if you want to take full advantage of more advanced file format features such as PDF bookmarks and hyperlinks?

Many applications don't bother supporting the PDF file format and assume you want to use a third party plug-in to display it. However, the LEADTOOLS HTML5 SDK includes support for not only rasterizing the PDF into an image, but also reading the text, hyperlinks and embedded thumbnails so that you can develop a fully-featured, zero-footprint PDF viewer application! This month we're going back to the basics! Many of our white papers dive into very specific topics and use-cases. We've recently seen an uptick of interest in our core DICOM functionality and have therefore waded into that set of features in this white paper. Boiled down, DICOM is about loading, displaying, modifying and using medical images and its metadata.

Though this is about the "basics" of using DICOM in LEADTOOLS Medical Imaging SDKs, there's hardly anything basic about DICOM so it's all relative. The DICOM specifications are thousands of pages long and we have several experts in house that devote nearly all of their time towards implementing this ever changing imaging format and communications protocol. In typical LEADTOOLS fashion, our experts have exposed that functionality to you in an easy-to-use, yet lacking-nothing-in-features interface on multiple platforms.

This month's white paper is an extremely practical one. In fact, we even had a few conversations with customers at last week's HIMSS conference about this very subject. Document archival has been around for quite a while now, but as archives grow and systems become more spread out and the client device ecosystem is much more diverse, standardizing your document archival system is becoming critical.
