GS1 DataBar, formerly known as Reduced Space Symbology (RSS), is a large family of barcodes that encode a GTIN-12 or GTIN-13 data structure within a 14 digit barcode. The various GS1 DataBar symbols have specific features that allow them to be read by different types of scanners and be used in a variety of industries ranging from retail point-of-sale applications, inventory tracking and healthcare.

 GS1 DataBar Omni-directional / RSS-14 Omni-directional
GS1 DataBar Omni-directional encodes the full 14-digit EAN.UCC item identification in a linear symbol that can be scanned omni-directionally by suitably programmed point-of-sale scanners. It has been developed to increase the number of unique codes and to meet the needs of encoding more information into smaller space.
GS1 DataBar Truncated / RSS-14 Truncated
The GS1 DataBar Truncated has the exact same data characteristics as the GS1 DataBar barcode, except the bar height is set to the GS1 DataBar standard of 13 times the X dimension. GS1 DataBar Truncated is designed to be scanned by wands, linear 2D imagers and handheld lasers. It cannot be scanned efficiently by omni-directional scanners.
 GS1 DataBar Stacked / RSS-14 Stacked
RSS-14 Stacked is a variation of the RSS-14 symbology that is stacked in two rows and is used when the normal symbol would be too wide for the application. It is used for small item marking applications and it is designed to be scanned by wands, linear 2D imagers and handheld lasers. It cannot be scanned efficiently by omni-directional scanners.
GS1 DataBar Stacked Omni-directional / RSS-14 Stacked Omni-directional
The GS1 DataBar Stacked Omni-directional may be scanned omni-directionally. This symbology does not allow for human readable text with the barcode. The data to encode is separated to create a split level barcode. The height of each row is ascertained from the bar height property of the control. The barcode contains a separator pattern, containing no data, which has a height equal to 3 times the X dimension.
 GS1 DataBar Limited / RSS-14 Limited
The GS1 DataBar Limited encodes a 14-digit EAN.UCC item identification with Indicator digits of zero or one in a linear symbol for use on small items that will not be scanned at the point-of-sale.
 GS1 DataBar Expanded / RSS-14 Expanded
GS1 DataBar Expanded encodes EAN.UCC item identification plus supplementary AI element strings such as weight and "best before" date in a linear symbol that can be scanned omni-directionally by suitably programmed point-of-sale scanners.
 GS1 DataBar Expanded Stacked / RSS-14 Expanded Stacked
GS1 DataBar Expanded Stacked is a variation of the RSS-14 Expanded symbology that is stacked into multiple rows and is used when the normal symbol would be too wide for the application.
