Sourcesmith Industries uses LEADTOOLS in
Software Solutions for Olympic Games
Sourcesmith Industries used LEADTOOLS
in the development of their Resource Framework system
that NBC Olympics will use to create access security
badges for the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. With
Resource Framework, NBC will create security badges
for its staff that will track their movements while
in the NBC facilities. Sourcesmith also used LEADTOOLS
in development of a planning system for the 2000 Sydney
Olympics. Sourcesmith's software has been designed
to work for 5 Olympic Games: Sydney 2000, Salt Lake
City 2002, Athens 2004, Torino 2006, and Beijing 2008.
Early Development
In 2000, Sourcesmith won a development project with
NBC Olympics to design and develop a system to help
the NBC engineers and producers plan the Sydney Olympic
Broadcast. In Sydney, NBC alone had 3000 people, 700
miles of cabling, 150 cameras, 400 video recorders, |

Framework to display a Print Preview before
printing staff ID badges. |

TV monitors and a 70,000 sq ft television facility.
One part of this planning system included attaching
graphics like camera shots, drawings, photos, instruction
manuals, etc. to all of the various objects within the
application. Sourcesmith developers used LEADTOOLS for
this phase, as the toolkit provided the TWAIN scanning
and screen/printer visualization tools that they needed.
Sourcesmith also created an asset tracking system for
NBC Olympics during the 2000 Games. NBC needed to track
all of their 30,000 pieces of equipment, so Sourcesmith
created a software solution to satisfy this need. The
solution became a commercial product called Resource
Framework. |
About Resource Framework
The Resource Framework application suite is an integrated,
modular system for complete resource management. The solutions
are affordable, infinitely scalable and easily customizable.
Resource Framework uses a familiar explorer style interface
to accomplish a multiplicity of tasks from file tracking,
security, inventory, purchasing and much more. It is an
accessible yet powerful system that works with companies
ranging from 10 to 500 employees. Resource Framework core
products can be deployed as a complete resource management
solution or integrated with other modules for a solution
with increased functionality. Implementations include Logistics,
Security, Purchasing, Manager and Inventory.
Features of Resource Framework:
- Extensive feature sets, expandable with
user-defined fields
- A familiar explorer interface that allows
for easy navigation
- Easily administered and configured by user
- Customizable to your business rules
- Customizable using Visual Basic for Applications
for greater depth and flexibility
- Affordable, competitive, and quick to show
return on investment
- Create your own reports with Crystal Reports
or Excel
- Access Resource Framework data easily via
Open Database Connectivity (ODBC)
- Adaptable to new technology such as the
world wide web and wireless hand-held computing
Resource Framework is made up of the core
and six optional modules. The core acts as the data hub
of Resource Framework as well as a stand-alone application.
Add-on modules 'plug-in' to the core and complement its
functionality.

Add-on Modules
- Manager
- Logistics
- Purchasing
- Remote
- Web Inventory
Core is comprised of four components
- Contact
- Catalog
- Visual Basic for Application Development
- Internal Security

Resource Framework's Contact
Manager component uses LEADTOOLS to help create photo
ID badges. |
| The security badge access
system being utilized by NBC Olympics in the 2002 Winter
Games was created using the Contact Manager component.
The Contact Manager allows NBC to create, print and
track staff ID badges. The visualization and TWAIN input
along with printing capability within the Contact Manager
is provided by LEADTOOLS. With LEADTOOLS, the user can
choose a background for the badge, typically a Photoshop
file, then block out the areas for staff picture, name,
ID number, etc using the rubber band tool. LEADTOOLS
allows the user to create a screen print preview and
then print directly to plastic badges using a badge
printer. |
| "In
this system, LEADTOOLS allowed us to capture the images,
store them and put them on the user-defined backgrounds.
LEADTOOLS helped to completely automate the NBC badge
security issue for the 2002 Salt Lake City Games,"
said Barry Swanson, President and CEO of Sourcesmith
Industries.
"Craig Lau, Director of IT for
NBC Olympics Inc. said, "We regard Sourcesmith
as an extension of NBC Olympics IT team, so it was
a natural choice to bring them our business requirements.
Once again they provided us with a solution that we
can and will implement immediately. The ID's present
a very professional image and will function at the
level NBC expects at the Games."
The Resource Framework system developed
for NBC Olympics won a Microsoft Industrial Solution
of the Year award, "Best Workflow and Tracking
Solution" at Comdex in 2000. |
| LEADTOOLS allows Resource
Framework to acquire images and place them on
user-defined backgrounds matched up with information
from a database to create photo ID badges.

|
| "LEADTOOLS makes
developing graphics products easy. The toolkit reduced
our development time considerably. The complete badge
printing add-on to our product only took one week
to develop thanks to the LEADTOOLS Raster Imaging
toolkit. Additionally, the one time I needed technical
assistance, I called LEAD's developer support team
and they were able to suggest a solution to a major
issue that I was having. They were incredibly helpful."
