What's New: LEADTOOLS 15 Updates
LEADTOOLS Barcode Modules are the most comprehensive Barcode Toolkits on the market with support for over 100 different sub types. LEAD's team of dedicated symbologists ensures LEAD's top position in the Barcode SDK market by adopting the newest barcode types, and by continually improving the performance and accuracy of existing types. The latest LEADTOOLS 15 release includes the new USPS 4-State symbol required by Intelligent Mail®, the recently ISO adopted GS1 Databar, as well as MicroPDF417. Additionally, LEAD has dramatically improved recognition and speed of 1D and 2D algorithms. LEAD is committed to staying ahead of the curve of new technologies and standards, ensuring that your product is ready for the future.

New Features and Updates:

The USPS 4-State barcode symbol is used in the USPS Intelligent Mail system. It combines the data from both PLANET and POSTNET symbols and additional tracking information into one barcode symbol. USPS plans to require the 4-State barcode to qualify for automation discounts at the beginning of 2009. (http://www.usps.com/mailpro/2007/mayjune/page5.html)

GS1 DataBar (formally known as RSS) is a 1D barcode that will replace existing EAN/UPC barcodes in 2010. GS1 DataBar stores more information in a smaller space. (http://www.gs1.org/productssolutions/barcodes/databar/overview.html)

MicroPDF417 is a 2D barcode derived from PDF417 and is designed for applications that need to store a moderate amount of data (150 bytes of data, 250 characters or 366 digits) while keeping the symbol size to a minimum.

When MicroPDF417 is combined with GS1 DataBar, the resulting symbol is known as a GS1 Composite Code B. In a composite barcode, the primary data such as product id is stored in the linear barcode. Supplementary data such as weight, expiration date, etc. is stored in the MicroPDF417 symbol.

LEAD is always optimizing and enhancing its barcode recognition algorithms to improve recognition and speed. For example, the new PDF417 engine is now able to recognize symbols that have been marked, scratched or stretched.

LEADTOOLS includes advanced image processing functions that add value to the LEADTOOLS Barcode SDK. These functions can be used in special case situations to improve recognition and speed. For more information on this, refer to this issue's Code Tip.

LEADTOOLS offers several other toolkits that can be integrated with the Barcode Modules. These SDKs include many additional imaging features including extensive image file format support (including reading and writing several raster file types, vector file types and PDFs), numerous image processing routines, document clean-up, OCR/ICR/OMR, annotations, compression, scanning support, medical imaging components, multimedia components, mobile OS support and much more.

LEADTOOLS Code Tip: Barcode Image Preprocessing

In the real world, images are not always perfect for barcode recognition. Images can come from many sources that can cause distortions in the image. LEAD has recently created projects and posted them on the support forum to provide information on how to correct common problems found in real world images sent by one of LEAD's customers.
