MKV (Matroska Multimedia Container) is an open format designed to hold an unlimited number of video, audio, picture or subtitle tracks inside a single file. It is intended to serve as a universal format for storing common multimedia content, like movies or TV shows.
WebM is a new multimedia format sponsored by Google, among other companies, for use with HTML5 video. The WebM format was developed with the goal of creating a completely open and free multimedia streaming format designed for use over the internet. WebM is encapsulated as a Matroska file using VP8 for video and Vorbis for audio compression. Both VP8 and Vorbis are based on free and open standards and by using the WebM format, developers can eliminate potential third party patent issues related to some of the other streaming technologies, such as H.264 and MPEG4.
Key Uses of MKV
- The tags will be the same no matter what audio format you use
- All tracks to a CD can be in a single file
- Delete portions of the audio without re-encoding with ease
- Store any content with any compression
